He Wrote, She Wrote: How to Write

Two of my favorite non-erotica authors, Jennifer Crusie and Bob Mayer, are running a year-long workshop on every aspect of writing a novel. Tons of excellent advice with the entertaining snark Jennifer and Bob use as each post their viewpoints on writing.

Writer's Resources by JoAnn Ross

NYT bestselling author JoAnn Ross had some great articles on writing conflict and great writing hooks. Check out the links under 'More Articles by JoAnn'.

On Writing...

Award-winning science fiction author Robert J. Sawyer has several useful articles on writing. I re-read the 'Speaking of Dialogue' regularly just to keep on top of the dialogue in my own stories.

Three-Act Structure

Best-seller Stephen Cannell is the author of this article on narrative structure found in screenplays and books. Great read if you're having trouble keeping up with or stuck on your plot.

Google U

This is a simple outline illustrating tips and tricks for quick and effective online researching, using Google. (I've worked in libraries for the past twelve years, so this is one of the few things I feel I have expertise in.) If you have questions about any of the stuff on the handout - email me!

The Passionate Pen Articles for Writers

Romance author Jenna Petersen (who also writes erotic romance as Jess Michaels) has a truly fabulous website for anyone interested in writing romance. Articles, industry information, suggestions, advice - you name it, it's here!

Great Books on Writing

I've got these on my bookshelf next to my desk and refer to them often. You can find most of them on Amazon.com.

Strunk and White's The Elements of Style

Grammar trips everybody up eventually! Keep this at hand, especially when you're editing. Better yet, keep it bookmarked - the whole book's online.

Self-Editing for Fiction Writers by Renni Browne & Dave King.

A must-have on how to edit your own work.

No Plot? No Problem! by Chris Baty

The manual that goes with National Novel Writing Month in November. Every year Chris encourages people to get 50,000 words out in 30 days. Insanity? Maybe, but it's also a great way to free your muse (and tie up your inner critique and lock her in the basement for a month).

The Novel Writer's Toolkit by Bob Mayer

Bob's no-nonsense approach to writing fiction served him well even before he joined up with NYT romance bestseller Jennifer Crusie. This book has everything from setting up your writing environment to pacing to the publishing side of the business after your book is done.

Bird by Bird by Anne Lamott

Got Writer's block? Read this book. It's chock full of writing exercises and inspirational advice to get your creative juices flowing again.

The Complete Writer's Guide to Heroes & Heroines

By Tami Cowden, Caro La Fever, Sue Viders.  Stumped on your characters? This book details sixteen master archetypes on which to base your characters.

Goal, Motivation, & Conflict by Debra Dixon

If you can't catch a workshop by this mistress of fiction plotting, then get her book. Once you understand what your characters want, why they want it, and what's stopping them from getting it, you've got your plot.

Writer's Groups

Don't go it alone! There are a ton of groups out there to give you support in your writing.

Romance Writers of America

THE organization for writers of romance. The annual conference provides excellent workshops and local chapters will give you great support. I wouldn't be published without the support of the people I've met since I've been a member.

Phoenix Desert Rose #60

The best chapter of RWA anywhere (okay, I may possibly be a bit biased - it's the chapter I belolng to. :)

Valley of the Sun Romance Writers

Desert Rose's sister chapter in Phoenix's West Valley. Another awesome group.

EPIC

Excellent online group for e-published authors.

Speculative Romance Online - Articles

As you can tell, I like paranormal romance. The folks at SpecRom have articles and resources for all your fantasy/romance writing needs. I highly recommend the Article archive.
